Piero Frassi’s Circles trio – with Gabriele Evangelista and Bernardo Guerra – invited Michela Lombardi, a jazz singer with a pop-soul background (years ago she reached #12 in the Billboard’s Club Airplay Charts) to celebrate Sting’s work. These brilliant arrangements of Sting’s greatest hits, from The Police years to the most jazzy songs (included the cover of Legrand’s The Windmills Of Your Mind, which was recorded by Sting in 1999, and Dienda, with music by Kenny Kirkland and lyrics by Sting) show the amazing interplay of the trio and the versatility of the vocalist, who’s able to span from bossanova (with Fragile sung both in English and in Portuguese) to funky-blues (It’s Probably Me), from bright swing (Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic) to ECM-ish, ethereal jazzwaltz (Dienda), from echoes of Dusty Springfield (The Windmills Of Your Mind) to the soulful and generous vocal performance of Wrapped Around Your Finger, from scat (on the bass & voice duo Englishman In New York) to more sophisticated 5/4 songs (Seven Days and the title-track Shape Of My Heart) ending with a touching piano & voice duo on Fields Of Gold that witnesses the telepathic feeling between Michela and Piero, grown over two decades of friendship and collaboration. |
