  Review

The story of Sugarpie and the Candymen begins in the summer of 2008 when five friends, Jacopo Delfini, Renato Podestà, Roberto Lupo, Georgia Ciavatta and Alex Carreri decide to found a band that starts from the beat and the swing sound can meet the most modern musical styles. What comes out is an original music genre, which is called "Progressive Swing": a mixture of manouche swing, jazz forties, pop, rock and rock'n'roll. The first album, "Sugarpie and the Candymen," is a collection of elaborate reallocations of famous hits (ranging from Prince to Beatles, from Blondie to Queen for example) played with the particular combo of the band: a gipsy guitar, an electric guitar , double bass, drum and voice, accompanied by sophisticated vocal harmonies. This formula is the key to Sugarpie and the Candymen's special sound. From 2009 to 2015, the group will produce three more albums, all edited by Irma Records: "Swing and Roll", where for the first time appear original songs composed by members of the band, "Waiting for the one", also this with half original songs and half reallocations of famous songs, and "Let It Swing", a monographic album dedicated to Beatles' music. During this time the Sugarpie are busy on long tours, which see them appear on the stage of almost all of Europe, with a parenthesis also in the United States. Since 2014 there is some change in band members, Alex Carreri leaves the spot for the double-bass Claudio Ottaviano, and from April 2016 the new frontgirl becomes Lara Ferrari. His warm and black voice gives a more special touch to the group's sound, blending perfectly with the pre-existing sound set. Since then the group has continued its activity by taking part in important events:
again Umbria Jazz, Boogie Woogie International Night (Germany), Jazz au Dehors (Paris, France), House of Jazz (Rome, together with Renzo Arbore), and many more. In May 2017, the fifth album is being produced, at the Digitube Studio in Mantova, under the supervision of Carlo Cantini. The title is "Cotton Candy Club", to remember that the roots of the group are always anchored in jazz (the Cotton Club is one of the most famous jazz clubs in New York). The cover depicts five children looking at a candy bar. It wants to be a reference to the turn that the Sugarpie intend to undertake with this album, lived as a new beginning. First in the sound: more compact and full, with a long post-production stage, and a mix closer to pop sound. And then the songs: 16 new songs, including 6 reallocations (including Jimi Hendrix, Bon Jovi and Jim Morrison) and 9 original compositions, both in Italian and in English. The result is an overwhelming ladder made up of swing-rock tracks ("Baby No More" and "Lithium"), electro-swing (a new frontier for the band like "Navigalonda" and "Unknowing"), old style songs ("See Of Knowing Cantar" and "Fire"), soft ballads ("Red" and "Attimo"), and more experimental tracks (in "Break on Through" double bass played with the bow, a banjo, a Fender Rhodes, a battery, a violin and three kazoo!). A more Hawaiian sound is heard in "So Beautiful", played with ukulele and steel guitar. As in the previous albums also in "Cotton Candy Club" there are illustrious guests, such as Mauro Negri at the Clarinet, Emiliano Vernizzi at the sax, Beppe di Benedetto al trombone and Gianni Satta at the trumpet. "Cotton Candy Club" is a jazz and rock album, sweet at times, and more rocky in others
